After the island won their independence from Columbus control on February 27th the carnival become more about the independence celebration. The carnival is one of the most colorful tradition in the island. Dominican citizens get together, dress up representing our traditional characters, and walk down the streets dancing to our carnival music. One of the main characters in the carnival are the diablo cojuelos, los Indios, Calife, se me muere Rebeca, Roba la gallina, and many more. The Dominican Republic is a catholic island. It is believed that the carnival purpose is to show an upside-down world where the ruler of the world is not god or Jesus Christ, but the devil himself. This carnival is held in La Vegas, Santo Domingo, and Montecristi.
