The Dominican Republic
History
Before the island was names the Dominican Republic it was known as “La Isla Española”. This name was giving by Christopher Columbus. When Christopher Columbus was returning to Spain he had spotted the island and decided to explore. After Columbus had gotten to the island he met the first settlements which were the Taino Indians. The Tainos welcomed Christopher Columbus with open arms to their island. Afterwards Columbus noticed that the Tainos were wearing gold, and that the island was full of it. Columbus and his explorer decided to invade the island and take over. By 1495 Columbus was the royal governor of the island. The Tainos were mistreated. The man were treated as slaves, and the women were being raped by Columbus explorers. After many years the Tainos fought back and took back the island.
After the Haitians got their independence from the French. The Haitians have taking over absolutely control of the island. That era was called “the Haitians occupation”. Juan Pablo Duarte and the citizens decided to attack the Haitians army. Leaving the Haitians no choice but to leave the island. By 1844 February 27th the island had gain their independence from the Haitian control. Adopting the new name the “Dominican Republic”.
